Engineering is one of the most exciting careers in the world. This is due to the fact that this field is becoming one of the marketable fields in the world due to the direction the world is heading technologically. This career is also regarded as one of the hardest ones in the world making only a few people being able to take the engineering degrees in universities.
Job opportunities are often observed to be reasonable but widely vary with the specialty of the field. This is due to the fact that the engineering field is very large and breaks up to distinct fields below it such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Genetic Engineering and many more others.
Most engineering jobs require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree except for the technicians who may be employed even if they have a Diploma. Engineering has the highest starting salary among all college graduates. However engineers are advised to engage in further learning so that they avoid being made irrelevant by the ever changing and evolving technology.
Engineers are mostly required to use the principles of mathematics and science to develop efficient solutions for technical problems. They also have the task of linking their scientific and technical knowledge with the modern day applications.
Over the years the quality of engineering courses offered in learning institutions has been under scrutiny. This has been brought about by the establishment of new schools who start offering engineering courses when they are not ready to do so. Engineering is a very serious course and the quality of what students learn in their five or so years during when taking the course should be up to scratch. Students should be lectured by lecturers who have the right skills, and since it is a very practical course students should also be able to have sufficient exposure on the machinery and equipment they expect to come to interact with when they are eventually employed.
This therefore led to the formation of the Engineering Council. Different countries have different names of engineering regulatory boards but the one in the United Kingdom is called the Engineering Council.
The Engineering Council was previously known as The Engineering Council UK. This board is the engineering regulatory board in Britain. The board is responsible for registration and authorization of qualified and incorporated engineers in Britain. The board does not only deal with the engineers but also regulates the institutions that offer the engineering courses. It does this by setting the standards for registration and the respective terms for registration of engineering institutions. Qualified institutions are therefore accredited and are allowed to offer the respective engineering course.
This Engineering Council is recognized by the British government as the sole national body governing the engineering profession. It works s with other engineering councils to ensure high standards are kept in engineering.
The origin of this council traces back to the year 1818 where the institution called the Institution of Civil Engineers was the pioneer institution. As the years moved towards the early 1840’s the Institute of Mechanical Engineering was formed and the Institute of Electrical Engineering was later formed in the early 1870’s.
However these institutions were regulating specific engineering fields and in the year 1965 the Joint Council of Engineering Institutions was formed. This name was however short lived since later that year it was changed to the Council of Engineering Students. This new board boasted a royal charter and had full authorization to regulate the engineering standards.
